NWAC notebook: EvCC’s Gilbert excels at track championships

Plus how locals fared in tennis and softball. Baseball begins Thursday.

Khalil Gilbert had a big meet at the Northwest Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships.

The Everett Community College sophomore finished in the top three in four events, including a championship in the men’s long jump at the meet, which took place Monday and Tuesday in Gresham, Oregon.

Gilbert, who hails from Alamogordo, New Mexico, won the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 6 1/4 inches. Gilbert placed third in the 400 meters with a time of 48.92 seconds. He also took third in both the 400 relay (43.68) alongside freshmen Jack Mehl, Joshua Hodges and Liam Naicker, and third in the 1,600 relay (3:25.17) alongside Mehl, Naicker and freshman Vitalii Shvets.

Everett had one other individual champion in Denna Gibb. The sophomore from Chauvin, Alberta, won the women’s javelin with a throw of 137-3.

Men’s tennis

Glacier Peak High School graduate Jackson Stumpf, now a sophomore at Bellevue College, won the men’s No. 1 singles bracket at the NWAC Tennis Championships, which took place May 11-12 in Wenatchee. Stumpf won both his matches in straight sets.

Kamiak High School graduate Anthony Madson, a freshman at Bellevue, won the No. 5 singles bracket, also taking both his matches in straight sets. He and Stumpf helped the Bulldog men win their sixth straight NWAC title.

Softball

The Edmonds College softball team went 2-2 at the NWAC Softball Championship, which took place last Thursday through Sunday in Portland, Oregon.

The ninth-seeded Tritons (28-14), behind the hitting and pitching of North Region MVP Jordyn Relethford, lost their opener to No. 8 Clackamas 9-3, then beat No. 16 Grays Harbor 7-6 and No. 10 Columbia Basin 5-3 in loser-out games before bowing out with a 2-1 loss to Southwestern Oregon.

Twelfth-seeded Everett (24-12) went two and out, losing 4-3 to No. 5 Spokane and 9-8 to No. 13 Douglas.

Baseball

Both Everett and Edmonds are among the eight teams that advanced to the NWAC Baseball Championship, which begins Thursday and runs through Monday in Longview.

Everett (30-14) advanced straight to the final eight as the North Region No. 1. The Trojans, who were ranked No. 3 in the final NWAC coaches poll, open the tournament against East No. 2 Blue Mountain (27-21) at 4:35 p.m. Thursday.

Edmonds (25-18), the North No. 2, advanced by winning its super regional. The Tritons, No. 7 in the final coaches poll, open against East No. 1 Spokane (28-17) at 9:35 a.m. Thursday.
