EDMONDS — Ice Day doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.
After another combo of freezing conditions and new precipitation hit Snohomish County, schools closed Wednesday due to icy roads.
Edmonds, Monroe, Mukilteo, Northshore, Snohomish, Stanwood-Camano and Sultan schools were closed Wednesday. While schools in Everett Public Schools weren’t closed, all after-school events were cancelled.
Meanwhile, schools in the Arlington, Lakewood and Marysville school districts were on a two-hour late start. After-school events were also cancelled in those districts.
Western Snohomish County was under a winter weather advisory until 1 p.m. Wednesday, with a glaze of freezing rain hitting the region. The eastern reaches of the county were under a winter storm warning until Thursday afternoon, with another foot or two of snow expected to accumulate in the Cascades. Winds could gust up to 40 mph there.
A few Snohomish County schools were already closed earlier this week after last week’s freeze thawed out and forced pipes to burst.
In Everett, firefighters reported a couple falls on the ice in parking lots this morning, while South County Fire warned of the dangers of icy streets.
“If you must walk outside today, take shorter steps and move slowly to reduce your risk,” South County Fire reported.
Throughout the county, bursting pipes remained an issue.
Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue spokesperson Peter Mongillo urged the public to know where the water cut-off in their house was, to prevent water damage from a pipe bursting.
As the weather warms up, precipitation was expected to continue throughout the week, but more freezing rain wasn’t likely in the lowlands, according to the National Weather Service. In east county and in the foothills, a snow-rain mix and freezing rain could persist in places like Darrington.
