On Oct. 4, the Everett Silvertips went on a seven-game road trip, spending the first six games in Canada and their seventh in Oregon.
Everett held its own in Canada’s various provinces, winning five of six matchups, netting 25 goals total and conceding 15. The results slotted the Silvertips atop the Western Conference standings.
This past Saturday, Everett (8-2) concluded its two-week road trip on a high note, blanking Portland 3-0 and remaining first in the conference and second behind Saskatoon in the league.
Everett 3, Portland 0
The Silvertips skated past the Winterhawks in their second game of the season, 8-2. Last Saturday was a closer result, but Everett still managed to score three goals, one in each period. Left winger Nolan Chastko, assisted by center Tyler MacKenzie and right winger Jesse Heslop, opened the scoring six minutes into the first period. Center Beau Courtney, assisted by center Carter Bear and defenseman Landon DuPont, netted the second goal halfway through the second period. And MacKenzie scored on an empty net with a few seconds remaining in the contest. The Silvertips had 30 shots on goal to Portland’s 26, and goalie Jesse Sanche saved each one to earn Everett’s first shutout this season.
Three stars of the Week
First star: Tyler MacKenzie. The 20-year-old center charted one goal and one assist in the Silvertips’ win against Portland this past weekend.
Second star: Nolan Chastko. The 19-year-old left winger has Portland’s number, since he recorded his second goal of the season versus the same team he made his first goal against in Everett’s second game this year.
Third star: Jesse Sanche. The 18-year-old goalie saved Portland’s 26 shots on goal to help the Silvertips earn their first shutout this season.
The week ahead
Everett has four games scheduled this week. The first three are inside Angel of the Winds Arena and the fourth back at Veterans Memorial Coliseum against Portland.
